How to Stay Calm in an Uncertain World

Let's quickly address the political state of the world we currently live in.

No, not to choose sides, or debate, or amplify the fear and other emotions surrounding everything that's going on. Instead, I want to acknowledge the uncertainty that many people are feeling. We can't control the direction the world takes, or who steps into power and how they use that privilege, for better or worse. This can feel extremely disconcerting. In the midst of this uncertainty, the single thing we can control is our own inner terrain. While we can’t control the world’s chaos, we can control how we react to outside circumstances as they present themselves.

A quick reminder here that nothing is ever as good or as bad as it seems. There is always something positive that comes from something terrible. In that light, what many people are projecting into a future they can't see is their fears of what could go wrong. This expends a tremendous amount of energy towards something that is uncontrollable on the individual level.

That means they're giving their power to it.

Where do your thoughts lie?

Are they preoccupied with what you’re afraid of?

Do they habitually gravitate to what could become worse, instead of what could go well?

No matter what happens in our future, we are going to be alright. We are overcomers, creative thinkers, powerful inventors and extremely resilient humans. Remind yourself that things often don't play out how we except or fear, and there are many moving parts that we can't see. Much of life's orchestra happens off our radar screen.

The best thing we can do is project not fear, but its replacement. Not anger, but what we want to feel in its place. What do you want to see in the future? How do you want to feel in the future?

Secure?
Free?
Happy?

Shine the light on a bright future instead of giving power to what you're afraid may happen. It's all going to work out in the end. While we're living inside the messy bits in between, find gratitude for absolutely everything.

It's all part of this wild game we call life.
