Why Success Feels Uncomfortable (And How to Handle It)

Historically, I have been placing a heavy emphasis on how to get things working in my teachings.

I’ve talked about how to exist in hardship, how to move on from that place, and how to deal with the heavy emotions that come up inside you as these situations impact your life experience.

So, let's talk about how to handle things when they actually start working instead.

Very few people talk about holding success once it arrives, about trusting things (and yourself) when they're going well, and not self-sabotaging the good stuff.

How do we learn to stay in something good?

Surprisingly, happiness is something many people struggle to feel and hold. More than you would expect.

This is because we are trained to expect our luck to turn, for failure to linger right around the proverbial corner, accompanied by heavy emotions we would prefer not to feel. Guarding ourselves just makes sense, but there’s a caveat.

We can guard ourselves against success in the same way.

Success can feel alien for those who haven't experienced it before. Think of that friend who says, "But I never win anything!" when they suddenly do. It's a moment of surprise and disorientation. The nervous system can push back against that foreign experience and decide you're safer in the old patterns. It's familiar, therefore predictable.

As much as we can question a situation, overthink things, or brace for loss, whatever life has planned for us will always arrive. What is in our control is fully enjoying the good in each moment and replacing fear of the future with faith. That takes a different kind of strength. It takes emotional strength and a dedicated mind.

That's resilience.

As we build resilience, we build confidence. As we build confidence and emotional strength, we can handle a change of luck, psychologically and emotionally. With this confidence boost comes a far greater capacity to enjoy the good moments and find gratitude... well, everywhere.

The very best thing you can do to enjoy and maintain success momentum is to focus solely on what's going great and on your beacon of light — the goal you're working towards.

We've all seen successful people gain extraordinary wealth only to have it slip through their fingers like sand. Why does this happen? Often, as soon as they hit success, their focus changes. What follows focus? Energy.

They suddenly make the shift from the forward momentum of winning and gaining ground to defence against loss.

Fear of loss is a powerful driver, and if you're constantly thinking about losing what you have, you're constantly giving it your creative power. What we give power to becomes reality. Plain and simple.

Focus solely on where you want to go.

If you're focusing on the present moment, gather as much gratitude into your heart as possible and let it erupt out of you in contagious happiness and enthusiasm. In this state, you will keep both your power and accomplishments. It's not about holding your ground, not about defence, but rather stepping up to expand at the same rate the universe is encouraging you to.

This state, by the way, is where the impossible suddenly becomes possible.

Accept that you deserve to feel this level of gratitude. You deserve this success because you're a good person sharing your gifts with the world, and that makes it a better place for all of us. Accept good into your life.

The more you flex this muscle, the more you practice this allowance and feeling of gratitude, the more good will come your way.
